On 20th April, 1915, the 2nd Leicestershire battalion of the 20th (Garhwal) Brigade, 7th (Meerut) Division of the Indian Army, had one company in trenches near La Couture, another company in brigade reserve and the other two companies in billets and it is likely that Henry Smith, who was killed on this day, was with the company in the trenches but the battalion diary has no information about any casualties. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
